Safety is always part of the game

Soccer and safety are inseparably linked to each otherboth during the world cup in South Africa as well as in Stuttgart during the "Day of Science" on the Vaihingen campus.

Stuttgart/Owen – The soccer world cup is in full swing and public awareness of safety is increasing, and not only in South Africa . In Stuttgart and in Vaihingen, safety likewise takes a seat in the front row during the presentation of "David". Because David is a true threat when it comes to scoring goals. It is the result of a project at the Institute of Industrial Automation and Software Engineering (IAS) of the University of Stuttgart : a more than two-meter-long, automatic soccer shoe recently presented to the public, for example during the "Day of Science" on the Vaihingen campus this June. Interest in the project is large. This is no surprise, as David can accurately fire balls at a goal at more than 130 kilometers per hour. Sensors from Leuze electronic serve to keep onlookers out of harm's way as they watch this spectacle. In this regard, the company, based in the German town of Owen , makes a safe contribution towards the success of the IAS prestige project with its "made in Germany " sensors. The integrated Safety Laser Scanner from Leuze electronic reliably detects whether anyone is located in David's danger zone as it prepares to kick. Should this be the case, David's control system immediately interrupts the process. The ball is not kicked and no one is injured. If the field is clear and the ball is kicked, another "player", also outfitted with safety sensors from Leuze electronic, demonstrates what it is capable of: "GOALIAS” – another IAS project – is an automated goalie that can stop the ball even at these high speeds, making it far superior to a human goalie. But this is no reason for our team to despair. After all, soccer is a team sport, not a technology competition. It is the weaknesses of the players that make the game interesting.
